Michal Migurski (Stamen) talks about how they do no user research for their information visualization projects.
My takeaway from this is not that user research is of no use, but that there are certain categories of products for which user research is not applicable. (I’m thinking specifically of things that encourage and are then defined by emergent and often unpredictable behavior.)
