Next-generation Office Wall Prototype — Microsoft

Yusuf Mehdi of Microsoft demonstrates a vision of the office of the future, using the walls as giant touch-screen displays. It even has what could be called the spiritual successor to Clippy (although he is much less obnoxious, in a Knowledge Navigator kind of way). (IAB MIXX conference, September 2009)

Siftables — David Merrill

David Merrill (MIT Media Lab) demonstrates Siftables, “independent, compact devices with sensing, graphical display, and wireless communication capabilities”, which aim to “enable people to interact with information and media in physical, natural ways that approach interactions with physical objects in our everyday lives” (TED, February 2009).

This video has been around for a while, but it is definitely worth a look if you haven’t already seen it.

ARhrrrr — an Augmented Reality Shooter — Georgia Tech/SCAD

Here’s another augmented reality application — this time a game (project site).

Stratus Air Concept — Cooper

The Stratus Air concept was Cooper’s entry in the recent I.D. Magazine Annual Review. It aims to “ease the pain and smooth the turbulence of business travel”.

The RaMo System

Here is another “using video for prototyping” example, by Alice Pintus, Erlend Kyte, and Nunzia Coco from the Copenhagen Institute of Interaction Design (project site).

See Adam Little’s Johnny Holland article, “Communicating UX Through Video: 1. Prototyping” for more examples of using video for prototyping.

Sketch-a-Move — Anab Jain and Louise Klinker

Here is another excellent example of the use of video for prototyping, by Anab Jain and Louise Klinker, both graduates of the Royal College of Art’s Design Interactions MA program. The project was also featured in Bill Buxton’s book “Sketching User Experiences”.

See Adam Little’s Johnny Holland article, “Communicating UX Through Video: 1. Prototyping” for more examples of using video for prototyping.

Keyless — Copenhagen Institute of Interaction Design

Another great example of a video prototype, this time from the Copenhagen Institute of Interaction Design.

See Adam Little’s Johnny Holland article, “Communicating UX Through Video: 1. Prototyping” for more examples of using video for prototyping.

Augmented Reality — “Nearest Tube” iPhone App

It looks like 2009 is the year of the augmented reality application. After several for Android, here is one for the iPhone 3GS. It uses the iPhone’s GPS and compass to show you where the nearest London Underground station is. Nice.

UPDATE: There is now also a version for New York — New York Nearest Subway.
